840 Woodrow

Overview

840 Woodrow is an urban mixed-use development adjacent to the Atlanta Beltline Spur, strategically located between Murphy Avenue and Sylvan Road. This extensive project features a mix of residential and commercial buildings, including three 5-6 story apartment buildings, two 3-story apartment buildings, two-story live-work townhomes, a renovated brick building, two street-front commercial buildings, and a split-level parking garage. The development boasts various public and private outdoor spaces, such as a retail urban plaza, food container court, building front garden plaza, pool amenity, and Beltline Spur access square.

Approach

Ironwood Design Group approached 840 Woodrow with a vision to seamlessly blend modern urban living with functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces. The front courtyard is designed as a multi-level space with a paving grid incorporating synthetic lawns and specially finished concrete to define different seating areas, creating a versatile and inviting environment.

The sculpture and art park, a key access node to the Atlanta Beltline Spur, is a testament to our commitment to community engagement. This park, featuring gravel paving, concrete plinths for art displays, string lights, an outdoor fire table, and concrete and wood seating walls, provides a modern industrial urban gathering place that encourages artistic expression and fosters community interaction.

The pool courtyard is a standout feature, designed with a robust central axis to reflect the building’s character. The 1,700-square-foot swimming pool includes built-in pool benches, sun shelves, trellises, a spa, and a summer kitchen. The pool deck offers residents a refreshing and luxurious retreat with specially finished concrete paving in a 45-degree pattern and planted islands and planters defining the perimeter.

The entry plaza at Allene Avenue is an urban square featuring a bosque of trees and concrete paving with paving bands connecting the two retail buildings. This grand lawn, adorned with string lights, extends the retail outdoor patio, providing a lively space for community events and social interactions.

The main pedestrian walkway runs along the entire south perimeter of the site, enhancing connectivity and promoting active transportation. Surrounded by naturalistic native plantings, this walkway serves as a pedestrian connector, linking various clusters within the development and providing two access points to the Beltline Spur path.
