Lullwater is a garden-style apartment community in Columbus, Georgia. Ironwood Design Group worked with The Woodruff Company to completely redesign the amenities area to provide residents with luxury, resort-style retreat, right in their backyard.
To complement the existing architecture, Ironwood opted for a bright, welcoming environment divided into multiple-use areas, which reflects The Woodruff Group’s cheerful color palette and family-friendly design. The refurbished clubhouse, redesigned with a farmhouse aesthetic, is buttressed by an elegant gable-roofed fireplace pavilion with dual grill stations, reinforcing the relaxing, family-oriented design.
Ironwood completely recreated the pool and surrounding patios, opting for a loose series of flowing pool-nooks that evoke a resort-style lazy river, with an elevated spa area, zero-edge, and a kid-friendly beach entry. Hardscape patio, grassy landscape, and tasteful greenery reinforce the pool’s strong radius, creating a casual elegance and distinct, sheltered spaces. Vivid green potters dot the poolside, filled with palms, knockout roses, and loropetalum, balanced by shade umbrellas in a cheerful watermelon color. Nearby, Ipe hardwood cabanas with billowing linen curtains provide a luxurious reprieve from the sun.
Around the pool, Ironwood took advantage of the area’s natural changes in grade to create separate use areas with plenty of privacy. “There’s a little space for everybody,” explained Sam Sampson, Ironwood Design Group partner. A series of paths through the greenery connect the community to the amenity areas, leading to a sand volleyball court and outdoor firepit. Oaks and pine trees fringe the community use areas, which will gradually grow into towering shade and a natural cooling effect. At the far edges of the community, Ironwood loosened the landscaping, allowing it to fade into the natural vegetation.
Ironwood also redesigned Lullwater’s entryway, which features a long drive up to a horseshoe driveway. IDG planted rows of elegant elm trees along the drive, with another planted strikingly off-center in the horseshoe’s circle garden. Carefully selected layers of landscape vegetation provide color and texture throughout the year; winter-friendly evergreens and boxwoods are complimented by the seasonal vibrancy of limelight hydrangeas, camellias, and fragrant tea olive.
Altogether, Ironwood’s redesign transformed the Lullwater community into a refreshing, luxurious space for residents and their visitors. As Sampson puts it, “It’s like a resort, right here at home”.
